Garlic (allium sativum)

Most of the garlic that you see in the supermarkets in Australia is imported from China. It is a pristine white colour and cheap to buy. What you might not know is that it is treated with growth hormones and radiation to prevent sprouting and bleached to prevent disease transfer (hence the pristine white colour).

The result is a product that void of taste and nutritional benefits.

Australian garlic is not treated – what you see is what you get.

Our garlic is grown naturally in soils enriched with composted cow and alpaca manures and fertilised with natural alrock trace elements to give it its best opportunity to grow. We don’t spray our plants with pesticides and use only minimal round up spray in our alley ways and boarders to assist in controlling weeds. The beds are hand weeded and mulched to prevent weed competition and rotated to prevent disease.

The result is a rich garlic flavour with a product full of natural health benefits.

Garlic has long been recognised for its powerful health and wellbeing promotion, helping with blood circulation. Allicin , which is released from garlic when the cloves are crushed or chopped, helps strengthen the immune system as well as containing antibiotic and antifungal properties. Garlic has health benefits for animals as well and can be used as in ingredient to minimise intestinal parasites, fleas and mites. It is also a wonderful insecticide when sprayed on plants.

The allicin in garlic is at its strongest when raw – making varieties like the giant Russian garlic (or elephant garlic – which is actually a relative of the leek and garlic family) particularly popular as it is not as strong as traditional garlic and can be easily eaten raw like a nut.
